Ľavá, pravá, ľavá, pravá. Dupot mojich chodidiel sa odrážal od betónového povrchu a robil priveľký hluk uprostred noci. Priveľký na to, aby som za sebou nezanechávala stopu. Nebežala som prvýkrát a bola som si istá, že ani naposledy.
Za sebou som vnímala rovnako rýchle kroky. Akoby mi ktosi dýchal priamo na krk. Nikomu som neublížila, nič som neukradla ani sa nijako nepodieľala na trestnej činnosti. Napriek tomu ma chcel ktosi zabiť. Bol mi neustále v pätách a ja som žila spôsobom, ktorý sa životom ani nedal nazvať. Túžila som sa prebudiť a zistiť, že to všetko bol iba sen. Ďalšia z nočných môr, na ktoré som si už začínala zvykať. Ale v tú noc sa mi nesnívalo!
V snoch som nevládala tak rýchlo utekať, jednoducho to nešlo. Ani mi prudko nebilo srdce a necítila som sucho v ústach od dychtivého lapania po vzduchu. Takže som vedela, že utekám naozaj. V duchu som rátala, koľko blokov som prebehla, a odhadovala, koľko ich ešte zvládnem. Na to, ako často behávam, by som mala mať podstatne lepšiu kondičku, napadlo mi.
Napokon som zabočila za kontajner na rohu ulice. Našťastie ľudia nerešpektovali jeho kapacitu a nakopili okolo toľko harabúrd, že som sa ľahko ukryla medzi ne. Učupila som sa za staré matrace a snažila sa prekonať kyslíkový dlh. Po chrbte mi stekali kvapky studeného potu. Načúvala som tichu a presviedčala samu seba, že som mu opäť unikla. No vzápätí som si uvedomila, že úteky mi nemôžu vychádzať donekonečna.
V dome oproti sa rozsvietilo a von vyšla žena v župane a s cigaretou v ruke. Neobzerala sa, kráčala ležérnym krokom priamo ku mne. Skrčila som sa ešte viac, nech ju nevystraším. Nemohla som dovoliť, aby ma prezradila. Stála tesne predo mnou, ani som nedýchala. Len som sa modlila, aby si ma nevšimla. Prehodila vrece s odpadkami ponad mňa a to s hrmotom dopadlo do smetiaka. Ona však ostala stáť a mne zastalo srdce.

Márne som naťahovala krk a snažila sa dovidieť, čo tak dlho robí. Vtom sa ma niečo dotklo. Niečo mokré a studené. Nepremyslene som vyskočila a rozbehla sa preč. Až keď som na smrť vystrašila ženu v župane, uvedomila som si, že to bol iba pes. Na ospravedlňovanie však nebol čas. Šlo mi o krk. Bezhlavo som zamierila do štvrte, ktorú som nepoznala.
Neviem, ako dlho som bežala, keď som za chrbtom začula výkrik: „Stojte!“ Ani by mi nenapadlo poslúchnuť. Nohy ma pálili, no strach ma nútil nezastavovať. Obzrela som sa ponad plece a v plnej rýchlosti narazila do človeka, ktorý sa z ničoho nič vynoril z tmy. Jeho ruky sa ma pokúšali zovrieť, nedokázala som uniknúť. Kričala som. Tak silno a hystericky, až ma to samu prekvapilo.

Keď ku mne pristúpil ďalší statný chlap, aby pomohol svojmu kumpánovi, bola som si istá, že to bol môj posledný útek. Nechcela som zomrieť! Bojovala som zo všetkých síl.
„Hej, počúvate ma? Nechceme vám ublížiť!“ zatriasol mnou jeden z mužov. Viac než jeho slová som vnímala, ako mi zviera ruky za chrbtom. „Ak neprestanete vystrájať, budeme vám musieť nasadiť putá!“
Pozrela som mu do tváre. Putá? Naozaj povedal putá? zarazila som sa. Prestala som sa metať, a keď som si všimla, že obaja majú policajnú uniformu, rozplakala som sa od úľavy. Zrazu ma opustili sily a bezvládne som sa zosunula na zem.

„Nikam,“ odpovedala som a zrakom znovu skontrolovala okolie.
„Žena, ktorá nás zavolala, takmer skolabovala. Povedala, že ste na ňu zaútočili pri smetiakoch.“
„Nezaútočila! Zľakla som sa jej psa a spanikárila som.“
„Budete musieť ísť s nami na oddelenie. Spísať zápisnicu.“
„Neviem, či je to dobrý nápad,“ odvrkla som. Nechcela som strácať čas na policajnej stanici. Nemohla som vedieť, či si ma tam nepočká. Nepochybne ma spoza rohu nepretržite sleduje. V hlave sa mi ako v zrýchlenom filme odohrávali možnosti, z ktorých som sa snažila vybrať tú najbezpečnejšiu.
„To nebola otázka, ale oznam. Pôjdete s nami!“ V tvári policajta bolo vidieť, že už má čo-to za sebou a že môžem byť vďačná, kým so mnou zaobchádza v rukavičkách. Nedôverovala mu, no nemala som na výber. Nakoniec som dobrovoľne, bez pút a ďalších zbytočných scén nastúpila do policajného auta.
Obzrela som sa cez zadné okno. Bol tam a čakal. Jeho siluetu som videla jasne kúsok od miesta, kde som sa zrazila s policajtmi. Po chrbte mi prebehli zimomriavky a môj tep sa opäť zrýchlil. Otočila som sa dopredu, zhlboka sa nadýchla a radšej sa už neobzerala.
Premýšľala som, či je policajné auto nepriestrelné a za akých okolností by bol môj vrah schopný po ňom vystreliť. Má zbraň alebo ma chce zniesť zo sveta holými rukami? uvažovala som. Vážim sotva päťdesiat kíl, nemal by so mnou veľa roboty.
O pár minút som sa ocitla na policajnej stanici. Poslušne som vošla do budovy s jedným policajtom pred očami a druhým za pätami. Žmúriac som sa snažila prispôsobiť prechodu medzi tmou noci a ostrým umelým osvetlením dnu. Bolo už neskoro, všade vládlo ticho.
Niekde uprostred prázdnej chodby otvoril jeden z policajtov kanceláriu, zažal v nej a ukázal na stoličku. Posadila som sa, prijala pohár vody a čakala, čo bude nasledovať. Bola som pokojná, pretože som sa cítila v bezpečí.
„Tak si to preberme ešte raz a pekne od začiatku. Kto vás sleduje a prečo? Skúste nám povedať všetko, čo vám napadne, čo ste videli alebo zažili,“ vyzval ma vyšetrovateľ.
Napila som sa studenej vody, nadýchla sa a začala rozprávať. Celú večnosť som odpovedala na milión otázok, teórií a konšpirácií, ktorými sa dvojica policajtov chcela dopátrať k niečomu konkrétnemu.

Čo by ste mi povedali, keby som prišla s teóriou, že ma niekto prenasleduje? Možno by ste zhovievavo prikývli, ale hneď po mojom odchode si zaťukali na čelo. Nemala som ani najmenšiu chuť ťahať do toho políciu. Veď som ani nevedela, či je to pravda, alebo mám len bujnú fantáziu.“ Obaja mlčky prikyvovali.
„Mali ste to bezodkladne nahlásiť,“ ozvala sa ich vyšetrovateľská podstata.
„Áno, mala, ale neurobila som to.“
„Takže ako dlho to už trvá?“

Nevedela som. Mykala som bezradne plecami a liezla tým na nervy sebe aj oproti sediacim policajtom. Položili mi ešte niekoľko otázok, no z mojich odpovedí neboli o nič múdrejší. Netušila som, kto ma prenasleduje, prečo ma naháňa ani čo chce. Postupne sme všetci traja pochopili, že rozhovorom strácame čas. Bez dôkazov mi nemohli ani pomáhať, ani ma chrániť.
Napokon ma pustili. Čo iné im ostávalo?
